Dr. Kristin Neff received her bachelor’s degree in communication studies from the University of Los Angeles and her doctorate in moral development from the University of California at Berkeley. She is an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. During her last year of graduate school, she became interested in Buddhism and started practising self-compassion.

She developed a theory and created a scale measuring self-compassion over 20 years ago. Dr. Neff has written numerous academic articles and book chapters on the topic and has been recognised as one of the most influential scholars in psychology. Well over 5000 studies have been conducted on self-compassion by various scholars since her seminal articles were first published in 2003. Dr. Neff identifies three critical components of her studies on self-compassion:
