What is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop in individuals who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic or life-threatening event. The events that can lead to PTSD include but are not limited to, natural disasters, accidents, combat, sexual assault, or severe physical or emotional abuse.

What are the symptoms of PTSD?.

PTSD manifests through a range of symptoms that persist for an extended period, often disrupting daily life. These symptoms can be categorized into four main clusters:

Intrusive Thoughts: Individuals with PTSD may experience recurring, involuntary memories, flashbacks, or nightmares related to the traumatic event. These intrusive thoughts can be distressing and make it challenging to focus on day-to-day activities.

Avoidance: To cope with distressing memories and reminders of the trauma, people with PTSD may go to great lengths to avoid situations, places, or people that trigger those memories. This avoidance can lead to social isolation and a restricted lifestyle.

Negative Changes in Thinking and Mood: PTSD can alter one’s thoughts and feelings about oneself and the world. This may involve persistent negative beliefs, distorted feelings of blame or guilt, and diminished interest in activities once enjoyed. Individuals may also struggle with feelings of detachment or estrangement from others.

Hyperarousal: People with PTSD may be easily startled, experience difficulty sleeping, and exhibit heightened irritability. They may be hypervigilant, constantly on edge, and have trouble concentrating. These symptoms can significantly impact daily functioning.

It is worth noting that PTSD can occur shortly after the traumatic event or may have a delayed onset, emerging months or even years later. It is a severe condition that can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. Seeking professional help, such as therapy or counselling, is often crucial for managing and treating PTSD symptoms. Treatment approaches may include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), medication, and support groups. Early intervention and a supportive environment are essential in helping individuals with PTSD navigate their path to recovery.

Benjamin’s Story, His Silent Struggle Unfolded.

Meet Benjamin, a 32-year-old male who works as a nurse and carries the weight of domestic violence, his nights tangled in the trauma’s web.  The scars aren’t visible, but they dictate his existence, echoing in the quiet corners of his mind.

Benjamin was admitted during Covid- 19 to a mental health ward for crippling insomnia. His admission took place after 3 weeks of lack of sleep. He would only sleep for 2 to 3 hours every second day. After a concerned family member visited him, he was brought to the Emergency Department, and following an assessment by a registered medical officer, he was admitted to the ward at midnight to be assessed by the consultant psychiatrist the next day.  After a few days in the ward, Benjamin began to understand the tight hold of his PTSD and the ramifications it holds for his mental health.

Understanding the Grips of PTSD:

Benjamin’s restless mind replays scenes of terror, a never-ending nightmare. His eyes, once hopeful, now mirror the pain etched into his soul by the hands of cruelty. Sleep eludes him; it’s a battleground where the past wages war against any attempt at peace.

Within the mental health ward’s sterile walls, Benjamin found refuge, a haven for his healing. The nurses and the multidisciplinary team used all their tools to help Benjamin’s restless mind to a path of healing.

Benjamin’s journey into PTSD unfolded over several harrowing years of living with a violently abusive partner. In the beginning, their relationship seemed like a typical love story, but the facade crumbled as the true nature of his partner emerged.

Once a source of comfort, the female became a relentless storm of aggression. Verbal insults escalated into physical violence, leaving Benjamin trapped in a cycle of fear and despair. His attempts to appease or escape were met with increased brutality, making his home a battleground of trauma.

Despite the torment at home, Benjamin dedicated himself to his career in social work. Working tirelessly to help others, he unknowingly neglected his well-being. The stress of the abusive relationship, coupled with the emotional toll of his profession, became a breeding ground for PTSD.

The breaking point came when the violence reached a peak, leaving Benjamin physically and emotionally shattered and not sleeping for 3 weeks.  Seeking refuge, he confided in friends and family, who rallied to support his escape from the toxic relationship. However, the scars of the abuse were etched deep into his mind.

Haunted by the memories of violence, Benjamin’s daily life became a struggle. Nightmares invaded his sleep, and the most straightforward triggers sent him into states of hyperarousal. Forming new relationships felt daunting, as trust had been shattered.

Therapists work with the Consultant Psychiatrist to unravel the knots of his mind, guiding him through the maze of suppressed memories. Together, they navigate the storm, seeking fragments of light within his shattered mind. Silent tears fall as Benjamin confronts his past, piecing together fragments of himself he’d buried.

Benjamin’s Therapy:


The journey of PTSD involves confronting the echoes of Benjamin’s abuse, gradually dismantling the walls built around his emotions. Each therapy session peels back layers of pain, revealing the resilience beneath. Benjamin learns coping mechanisms through the therapeutic process, gradually transforming the once overwhelming triggers into manageable challenges. The support of a skilled therapist becomes a guiding force, helping him navigate the unpredictable currents of PTSD.

Benjamin also attended group therapy sessions to introduce Benjamin to a community of survivors of various mental illnesses.  Fostering a sense of shared understanding and camaraderie. Together, they form a network to heal collectively.

As therapy progresses, Benjamin begins to rebuild trust in others and, crucially, in himself. The therapeutic journey becomes a voyage of self-discovery, uncovering strengths he never realised he possessed.  After 6 weeks in the mental health ward, Benjamin is discharged into the hands of his new therapist (Joe)

Joe introduces Benjamin to mindfulness techniques, providing tools to ground him in the present moment when intrusive memories threaten to pull him back into the past. Slowly, he regains control over his thoughts and reactions.

The therapeutic alliance becomes a cornerstone of Benjamin’s recovery. With each session, Joe becomes a steady presence, offering insights, encouragement, and a compassionate ear. Benjamin learns that healing is not a linear process; it’s a series of steps forward and occasional steps back.

As therapy propels him toward recovery, Benjamin begins to envision a future free from the shackles of PTSD. The bridge that therapy constructs extends beyond the therapeutic space, empowering him to face the world with newfound resilience.

The Power of Healing and Resilience:

Recovery for Benjamin meant redefining his understanding of safety and trust. The scars may never fully fade, but with time, support, and therapeutic intervention, he learned to navigate the world without the constant shadow of fear. Benjamin’s story serves as a stark reminder of the silent battles endured by survivors of domestic violence.

It emphasizes the importance of breaking free from toxic relationships, seeking help, and prioritizing one’s mental health to prevent the lasting impact of PTSD. Through the fog of PTSD, Benjamin emerges, a survivor rebuilding, not defined by his past. In shared stories, he finds solidarity, realizing he is not alone in the struggle to reclaim life.

Day by day, night by night, the grip of PTSD loosens, Benjamin’s sleep pattern improves and is replaced by a newfound resilience in his mental health.  Benjamin’s acknowledgement of the need for professional help, Benjamin was able to embark on a therapeutic journey to confront and heal from the trauma. Therapy sessions became a lifeline, helping him untangle the complex emotions and rebuild a shattered sense of self. After some time, Benjamin visited the Great Wall of China, gained confidence in starting a new relationship, and married her in the fall.
