Your mental health is essential, as are those dedicated to caring for it. With mental health issues on the rise, the significance of mental health nursing cannot be underestimated. In today’s rapidly evolving and interconnected world, the capacity to offer support, compassion, and expert care is more crucial than ever. Embracing the challenges of this field provides a distinctive sense of purpose and fulfilment. In this blog post, we look at psychiatric nursing and walk the path of a shift in a mental health nurse’s life. So, let’s dive in.

A Day in the Life of a Psychiatric Nurse.

Molly, a dedicated psychiatric nurse, embodies a profound commitment to the well-being of those she serves. Her days are a testament to resilience and compassion as she navigates the mental health care nursing field. With a keen understanding of crisis intervention, Molly assesses situations and provides immediate support to distressed individuals. Her dedication to ensuring the safety of her patients and fellow staff members reflects her professional expertise. With empathy and sound clinical judgment, Molly touches the hearts of many. Let’s take a closer look at a morning shift for Molly!

Meet Molly: A Day in the Life of a Psychiatric Nurse

Imagine starting your day at 5 AM, preparing for a shift that could change lives. Molly, a dedicated psychiatric nurse, does this every morning, planning for the unknowns of a change that could bring anything from crisis interventions to moments of profound connection.

Molly checked her ward roster. The roster platform appeared quickly on her laptop.  It’s an early shift tomorrow! on Easter Sunday! That means I will have to set my alarm for 5 a.m. “Dame it,” she thought! She rushed to the kitchen to put together breakfast and lunch.

“I may not get morning tea, so I had better make up a shake.” As the blender sounded and echoed through the house, she grabbed a snack bar, a banana, a tin of tuna, and some savoury biscuits. Molly piled them all into the lunch bag and placed them in the fridge.

“That will do,” she thought!  After making herself a cup of tea, she pondered the day ahead. “I wonder what type of patients I will nurse tomorrow”?

Morning Challenges and Critical Care

From 7 AM the next day, Molly was deep into assessing new patients, managing medications, and planning care for those in her care. Her ability to combine clinical expertise with empathy allows her to make a real difference to the patients she nurses. Each patient presents unique challenges—some battling severe depression, schizophrenia, bipolar, and others grappling with the effects of long-term substance abuse. Despite this, Molly’s focus remains unwavering: to provide the best quality care possible.

Noon: A Test of Resilience and Adaptability

Molly’s mid-morning is typically reserved for therapy sessions when she connects deeply with her patients and helps them find coping strategies. The group therapy sessions also help the patients share their experiences, provide mutual support, and learn from one another. But today, a sudden conflict escalates in the ward, triggering a Code alarm. Molly’s quick response and de-escalation skills ensure safety and stability, showcasing her role’s intense, unpredictable nature.

Molly’s deck phone sounded, telling her it was time to attend Case reviews. No morning tea break again,” she thought. Case reviews are fascinating and a great chance to collaborate with other healthcare team members, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers, to establish individual patient treatment goals and interventions. Molly updated detailed documentation of patients’ progress, treatment plans, and any significant observations or incidents. Just as the case review for the doctor’s team was ending, the Code alarm sounded!

Staff members can activate the Code alarm if they observe a potential personal threat or witness a situation where a conflict between patients is escalating. Molly ran to the area of the ward that needed her assistance.

Mental health nurses are trained to respond to crises that may arise during their shift. They assess the severity of the problem, provide immediate support to individuals in distress, and ensure the safety of patients and staff. Mental health nurses undergo training to address crises effectively during their shifts. Their responsibilities include assessing the severity of the problem, offering immediate support to individuals in distress, and prioritizing the safety of patients and staff members. They may collaborate with other healthcare professionals to develop crisis management strategies and coordinate necessary referrals to specialised services.

As she approached the incident, she could see that two male patients were engaged in a physical altercation, yelling at each other because they both believed they were the Holy Spirit! Staff quickly intervened and settled both parties, using their training and sharp de-escalation techniques. Molly and her colleagues supported all patients involved by using active listening and showing empathy and understanding to the patients and staff involved.

“Now for lunch,” Molly thought. She glanced at the clock near the nursing station. It read 1300 hrs. It was afternoon handover time, not lunchtime.” quickly, she drank a cup of water, entered the handover room, and nestled herself between two of her great nursing colleagues to present her handover of her five patients to the afternoon team.

After the handover, she quickly ate her banana, tinned tuna, and drank a hot English breakfast tea.   “Now for the discharges.” She collaborated with the interdisciplinary team to discuss patients’ progress, review treatment plans, and make any necessary adjustments to ensure coordinated and holistic care had been given and the team hadn’t missed anything.   She then created the two discharge plans and follow-up appointments and connect patients with appropriate community resources for continued support. In the nursing station, she heard a nurse sharing a joke. Molly laughed.

Her colleague Jenni asked,” Are you on tomorrow morning’s shift?” Molly replied, “Yes,” with a sigh. Are you?” “Yes, let’s do it all again,” she said with a cheeky giggle.
